Following the 2023 storms, Auckland Council assumed responsibility for 1200 high-risk properties purchased across the region. Vacant homes awaiting removal were exposed to vandalism and unauthorised access, with the geographic spread making constant physical supervision impractical. This enabled real-time observation and immediate escalation without on-site guards, acting as both a visible deterrent and an active response capability during recovery works.
